Yesterday was International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. March is National Women’s History Month, so these achievements can and should receive a month-long celebration. As with Black History Month, we really shouldn’t limit the celebration of such achievement to just 31 of 365 days each year, and we won’t, but it is good to shine the spotlight whenever possible.

Our sons need to know about Women’s History Month, and celebrate it mightily along with our daughters. As my 17-year-old son said to me recently, “Being a feminist just means you believe in equality, in every sense of the word”. In this day and age where our President has made astoundingly sexist remarks, regularly threatens to defund Planned Parenthood, and has named more white men to his cabinet than every president since Ronald Reagan, raising sons who support women’s equality is going to take a lot more effort on our part.

The 2017 theme for National Women’s History Month, “Honoring Trailblazing Women in Labor and Business”, honors women who have successfully challenged the role of women in both business and the paid labor force. This month GCP will include posts focusing on trailblazing women we all should know and celebrate. Stay Tuned.
